When choosing a hosting plan, it’s important to consider your bandwidth and storage requirements. While these two factors are often overlooked, they play a critical role in your website’s functionality, scalability and performance. In this article, we will explain the basics of bandwidth and storage in a way that’s easy tounderstand, help you determine your needs, and provide tips for selecting a plan that meets your needs without overpaying for resources you don’t need.
Bandwidth is the amount of data that can be transferred between your website and its visitors over a given period of time. The bigger your site is, the more traffic you’ll have and the more bandwidth you’ll need. If you have too little bandwidth, your website may slow down or even go offline at times. If you’re unsure how much bandwidth you need, there are many online calculators and tools that can help you estimate your requirements.
Storage is the amount of space on a server that’s allotted to holding the files, databases and images that make up your website. This includes any files you upload through a Content Management System (CMS), backups, or other resources that are saved but not used on your public-facing website (additional downloadable resources, etc.).
As you might expect, storage requires less bandwidth than bandwidth because data is stored locally rather than being sent over a network. That said, it’s still important to accurately estimate your storage needs so that you don’t run out of space or exceed your allotted disk space limit.
Unlike bandwidth, which is measured in megabits per second (B/s), storage is typically reported in Megabytes per second (MB/s). The higher the MB/s rating is, thefaster your storage will perform.
In addition to the size of a file, the type of drive and its interface also affects storage bandwidth. Traditional hard disk drives (HDDs) tend to have lower bandwidth ratings than Solid State Drives (SSDs), which are more energy-efficient and don’t have moving parts.
